Storytelling Workshop

UPCOMING!   PUPPETS IN STORYTELLING WORKSHOP

Stephanie Holman, seen here with a Crocodile and friends, has long been using puppets to bring life to storytelling.   Mind you, this can be something entirely different than putting on a puppet show (although she is excellent at that too!).  

Telling with a puppet can:

 *focus attention in a challenging environment

 *give the single teller a second voice

*illuminate a character with form and motion

*add surprise and delight to stories.  

Puppets work with stories for all ages, not just the youngest audience, and they are super to provide variety in long programs for families or mixed age groups.

Stephanie is soon to leave Bloomington and the Guild, but before she leaves she is going to impart her puppet wisdom to us in a free Workshop on Thursday, January 30, 2020.

This is the first of a series of workshops designed to introduce tellers and would-be tellers to new techniques and storytelling skills.

Professional storyteller and retiring Children’s Librarian Stephanie Holman will share her experience with puppets in this creative and immersive workshop. Teachers and Librarians for preschool through elementary age can bring or choose a story and utilize puppets and will leave the workshop with a new puppet show.

Plein Air Storytelling, or, The Guild Gets Out

While one of us was telling "Six Legged Stories" at the annual "Bug Fest" in Bloomington,

Another teller was masterfully entertaining groups at the New Harmony Arts and Music Festival.

And yet another storyteller was preparing to present tales for Cub Scouts out in the woods.

Summer is the time to take stories outside!

2015 Festival of Ghost Stories fades into history

Oh, we had a fine time at the Festival of Ghost Stories.

Sure, there were some (literally) cold feet -- and noses and ears, too. 

 But really the weather was just fine for the event.

The audience was wrapped up warmly and ready to listen to our tales.

 Stephanie welcomed everyone and got the evening off to an appropriately yucky start with the sort of urban legend that makes everyone go "eeewwww".

The stories followed-- some serious, some suspenseful, some ironic, some amusing, some just plain spooky -- and all entertaining.

I do hope you were in the audience since we didn't tape the telling this year.

And it was really worth hearing!

Storytelling in Southern Indiana

"GOODIES, GOBLINS, & GHOST STORIES"

It was a typically cold Autumn evening in Hope, Indiana for the "Goodies, Goblins, and Ghost Stories" event.  The town square was filled with chilly families out to celebrate the season.

The storytellers stayed warm in a cozy heated  tent with hot apple cider (and a few spiders).  

The tent was not only heated, it also was divided into separate sections so that we could tell tales appropriate for younger kids on one side and the scary ones for older kids and adults on the other side.

The audiences came in all sorts of costumes, and listened to some spooky stories --

some that made them shiver,

and some that made them laugh.

This was one festival that set up the environment for storytelling perfectly.

Divafest - The Storytelling Stage

You know we love those Divas, especially when one is our own Stephanie Holman....

Yes, this year Diva Fest  in Indianapolis features a Storytelling Stage.  Here's an opportunity for you to hear original stories told by four wonderful women on Sunday, March 10, from 2 - 5 p.m.

The program will be at Indy Reads Books, 911 Massachusetts Avenue, and tickets are $12.00 at the door.

Stephanie will open the program at 2:00 with three of her original stories, collected under the title "Move It or Lose It."   We know listeners will enjoy the ride!
